Product Description

Tropicacyl Eye Drop (Tropicamide 1%) is a short-acting mydriatic and cycloplegic ophthalmic solution used to dilate the pupil and temporarily paralyze accommodation. It is widely utilized during diagnostic eye examinations, including fundus evaluation, refraction testing, and retinal imaging. Tropicacyl provides rapid and reliable pupil dilation while maintaining a favorable safety profile, making it a standard choice in clinical ophthalmology.

Indications & Uses

  • Diagnostic Pupil Dilation: Enables detailed examination of the retina, optic nerve, and posterior segment.
  • Cycloplegic Refraction: Temporarily relaxes the ciliary muscle for accurate refractive error assessment.
  • Pre/Post-Procedure Dilation: Used before certain eye procedures requiring a dilated pupil.
  • Adjunctive Use: May be used with other mydriatics (e.g., phenylephrine) for enhanced dilation.

Benefits & Effectiveness

  • Produces rapid pupil dilation, typically within 15–30 minutes.
  • Duration of effect generally lasts 4–6 hours, depending on patient response.
  • Allows accurate and thorough retinal and posterior segment evaluation.
  • Shorter duration and faster recovery compared with stronger cycloplegics such as atropine.
  • Well tolerated with minimal systemic absorption.

Directions for Use

  • Instill one drop into the affected eye(s) 15–30 minutes before the diagnostic procedure,
  • or as directed by an ophthalmologist.
  • Wash hands before use and avoid touching the dropper tip.
  • After instillation, press gently on the inner corner of the eye to reduce systemic absorption.
  • Do not wear contact lenses during use.
  • Effects may last several hours—sunglasses are recommended due to light sensitivity.

Storage

  • Store at room temperature (below 25–30°C).
  • Protect from light, heat, and moisture.
  • Do not freeze.
  • Keep tightly closed when not in use.
  • Discard any remaining solution 4 weeks after opening.

Possible Side Effects

Common: Temporary stinging, blurred vision, light sensitivity (photophobia), dryness.
Uncommon: Eye redness, increased tearing.
Rare / Serious: Elevated intraocular pressure (especially in narrow-angle glaucoma), headache, systemic anticholinergic effects—seek immediate medical attention if severe symptoms occur.

FAQs

Tropicacyl Eye Drop (Tropicamide 1%) is used to dilate the pupils for eye examinations such as fundus evaluation or refraction testing. It may also be used to temporarily relax the eye muscles in certain inflammatory conditions.
Temporary blurred vision, sensitivity to light, and mild stinging may occur. In some cases, the eyes may feel dry or irritated for a short period.
Tropicamide is an anticholinergic agent that blocks the responses of the iris sphincter muscle, causing pupil dilation and temporary paralysis of accommodation.
Instill one or two drops in the eye(s) as directed before examination. Effects usually begin within minutes and may last several hours. Avoid driving until vision returns to normal.
It is intended for patients undergoing diagnostic eye examinations or requiring pupil dilation. Not suitable for individuals with angle-closure glaucoma unless medically supervised.
