Product Description

Tropicacyl-Plus Eye Drop combines Tropicamide (a short-acting cycloplegic) with Phenylephrine (a potent mydriatic) to deliver fast, reliable, and enhanced pupil dilation for diagnostic and procedural use. This dual-action formulation provides stronger and longer-lasting dilation than Tropicamide alone, allowing clearer visualization of the retina, optic nerve, and posterior segment. Tropicacyl-Plus is widely used in ophthalmic clinics for fundus examination, refraction testing, and pre-procedure dilation requiring robust mydriasis.

Indications & Uses

  • Diagnostic Mydriasis: Provides strong and rapid pupil dilation for funduscopy, OCT, and detailed retinal evaluation.
  • Cycloplegic Refraction: Helps relax the ciliary muscle for accurate refractive assessment.
  • Pre-operative Dilation: Commonly used before laser procedures, cataract surgery, and retinal interventions.
  • Enhanced Mydriasis: Suitable when Tropicamide alone is insufficient to achieve adequate dilation.

Benefits & Effectiveness

  • Combination of two agents provides stronger and more sustained dilation compared to monotherapy.
  • Onset typically within 10–20 minutes, offering rapid clinical readiness.
  • Duration of action 4–8 hours, depending on patient response.
  • Allows improved visualization of posterior structures for precise diagnostic assessment.
  • Well tolerated under professional use with a predictable safety profile.

Directions for Use

  • Instill one drop in the affected eye(s) 15–20 minutes before examination,
  • or exactly as directed by an ophthalmologist.
  • Wash hands before use and avoid touching the dropper tip.
  • Apply gentle pressure to the inner corner of the eye (punctal occlusion) for 1 minute to reduce systemic absorption.
  • Do not wear contact lenses during use.
  • Due to prolonged dilation and light sensitivity, sunglasses are recommended.

Storage

  • Store at room temperature (below 25–30°C).
  • Protect from excessive heat, moisture, and light.
  • Do not freeze.
  • Keep tightly closed when not in use.
  • Discard any remaining solution 4 weeks after opening.

Possible Side Effects

Common: Stinging on instillation, blurred vision, photophobia, dryness.
Uncommon: Eye redness, tearing, mild headache.
Phenylephrine-Related: Temporary increase in blood pressure or palpitations (rare with proper punctual occlusion).
Serious (Rare): Angle-closure episode, severe eye pain, or worsening vision—seek urgent care.

FAQs

Tropicacyl-Plus Eye Drop is used to dilate the pupils and immobilize the eye’s focusing muscles for diagnostic procedures such as fundus examination and refraction testing. The added phenylephrine enhances dilation and reduces redness by constricting superficial blood vessels.
Temporary blurred vision, stinging sensation, light sensitivity, or mild dryness may occur. Rarely, elevated blood pressure or increased heart rate can be seen due to phenylephrine.
Tropicamide blocks cholinergic responses, causing pupil dilation and paralysis of accommodation. Phenylephrine stimulates alpha-adrenergic receptors, further widening the pupil and constricting conjunctival vessels.
Instill one or two drops in the eye(s) as directed before examination. Effects typically begin within minutes and may last several hours. Avoid driving until full visual recovery.
It is intended for patients undergoing diagnostic examinations or requiring strong pharmacologic dilation. Not suitable for individuals with angle-closure glaucoma or cardiovascular instability unless medically supervised.
