Billtree 600 contains 600mg of Praziquantel, a cornerstone antiparasitic medication listed as a WHO essential medicine. It is globally recognized for its efficacy against flatworm infections, targeting both trematodes (flukes) and cestodes (tapeworms).
Its mechanism of action involves inducing intense spasms and paralysis in the worms’ musculature by altering calcium ion permeability. This results in the parasites detaching from host tissues, followed by their natural elimination from the body.
Billtree 600 is widely employed in the treatment of schistosomiasis, liver fluke disease, tapeworm infections, and neurocysticercosis, and continues to play a central role in mass deworming campaigns and clinical practice worldwide.
• Antiparasitics > Schistosomiasis
First-line treatment for all blood fluke species including S. haematobium, S. mansoni, and S. japonicum. Disrupts parasite adherence to vessel walls, facilitating their elimination.
• Antiparasitics > Liver and Lung Fluke Infections
Recommended for clonorchiasis, opisthorchiasis, and paragonimiasis. Recognized as the standard of care in endemic regions, highly effective in resolving symptoms and preventing complications such as fibrosis or pulmonary nodules.
• Antiparasitics > Tapeworm Infections
Treats taeniasis, diphyllobothriasis, and hymenolepiasis with high efficacy. Often administered as a single oral dose, targeting both adult and larval stages of tapeworms.
• Antiparasitics > Neurocysticercosis
Used alone or in combination with corticosteroids and albendazole to treat CNS infections caused by Taenia solium larvae. Reduces cyst viability and remains a vital therapy in neuro-parasitic disease management.
• Increases calcium ion permeability in parasitic cell membranes, disrupting ionic balance.
• Causes sustained contraction and paralysis of worms, preventing further movement and survival.
• Facilitates immune-mediated destruction, allowing host defenses to attack the immobilized parasites.
• Promotes expulsion of parasites from the body through natural elimination processes.
Adults
• Schistosomiasis: 20 mg/kg orally three times in one day, spaced 4–6 hours apart.
• Liver Flukes: 25 mg/kg three times in one day, or 75 mg/kg/day in 3 doses for 2 days.
• Intestinal Flukes: 75 mg/kg/day in 3 divided doses for 1 day.
• Lung Fluke: 25 mg/kg orally three times daily for 2 days.
• Tapeworms: 5–10 mg/kg orally once.
• Dwarf Tapeworm (Hymenolepis nana): 25 mg/kg orally once.
• Cysticercosis: 50 mg/kg/day for 15 days.
Children (≥1 year)
• Dosage based on body weight, same indications as adults.
• S. haematobium / S. mansoni: 40 mg/kg/day in 2 divided doses.
• S. japonicum / related species: 60 mg/kg/day in 3 divided doses.
• For complicated CNS infections, treatment should be under specialist supervision.
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C.
Keep away from moisture and direct light.
Ensure the container is tightly closed and out of reach of children.
Common: headache, nausea, dizziness, abdominal discomfort, and fatigue.
Rare: allergic reactions.
Special note: in neurocysticercosis, symptoms may temporarily worsen due to immune response against dying parasites; corticosteroid co-therapy is recommended.
