Banocide 50 - 400 Tablets contains diethylcarbamazine citrate (DEC), a piperazine derivative anthelmintic that serves as the primary treatment for lymphatic filariasis and certain other filarial infections. DEC works by altering the surface structure and metabolism of microfilariae, making them more susceptible to host immune attack, and also reduces the motility of adult worms. This dual action interrupts the life cycle of the parasites, alleviates symptoms, and reduces transmission rates in endemic populations. It is a critical component of the WHO Global Programme to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis, often used in mass drug administration (MDA) campaigns. DEC has also shown efficacy in managing loiasis and tropical pulmonary eosinophilia. In rare cases, it is included in prophylactic kits for certain skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs) where parasitic involvement or secondary bacterial infection risk exists.

DEC is both microfilaricidal and, to a lesser extent, macrofilaricidal. It clears microfilariae from the bloodstream rapidly, reducing infectivity to mosquitoes. It also impacts adult worm viability, helping to resolve lymphatic inflammation and prevent progression to chronic conditions like elephantiasis. In tropical pulmonary eosinophilia, DEC significantly lowers eosinophil counts and alleviates respiratory symptoms.
Indication: - Lymphatic filariasis (Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi, Brugia timori) - Loiasis - Tropical pulmonary eosinophilia - Other filarial infections Adult Dosage & Regimens: - MDA: Single annual dose of 6 mg/kg (with albendazole 400 mg) for 4–6 years in endemic areas without Onchocerca volvulus co-endemicity. - Individual treatment: Day 1: 50 mg orally after meals Day 2: 50 mg orally three times daily Day 3: 100 mg orally three times daily Days 4–14: Continue 6 mg/kg/day divided into three doses - Tropical pulmonary eosinophilia: 6 mg/kg/day divided three times daily for 14 days - Loiasis: Same initiation, then 9 mg/kg/day divided three times daily for days 4–21 Pediatric Dosage: - MDA: ≥2 years – same as adult (6 mg/kg single dose annually) - Individual treatment: Day 1: 1 mg/kg orally after meals Day 2: 1 mg/kg three times daily Day 3: 1–2 mg/kg three times daily Days 4–14: 6 mg/kg/day divided three times daily - Loiasis: Same initiation, then 9 mg/kg/day divided three times daily for days 4–21 Method: - Administer orally after meals to reduce gastrointestinal side effects. Contraindications & Precautions: - Contraindicated in onchocerciasis due to severe Mazzotti reaction risk with ocular damage. - Avoid in heavy Loa loa infection because of encephalopathy risk. - In MDA, exclude children under 2 years, pregnant/breastfeeding women, and chronically ill or frail individuals. - Monitor for allergic or inflammatory reactions due to parasite death.
Store below 30°C, protected from moisture and direct light. Keep in a tightly closed container, out of reach of children.
Common: Mild fever, headache, malaise, dizziness, nausea. Moderate: Itching, rash, lymph node tenderness, swelling. Serious: Severe allergic reactions, respiratory distress, ocular inflammation in onchocerciasis.
