Eltocin 250 is a generic macrolide antibiotic manufactured by IPCA Laboratories, containing Erythromycin 250mg. It is widely used to treat bacterial infections affecting the skin, respiratory tract, and certain sexually transmitted diseases. This medication is particularly effective in managing skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs) such as cellulitis and impetigo, and is commonly prescribed for acne treatment. Eltocin 250 also serves as an alternative treatment for syphilis in patients allergic to penicillin and is effective against chlamydia and gonorrhea infections. Additionally, it plays a role in treating respiratory diseases including pneumonia, bronchitis, and tuberculosis, especially in cases of atypical pneumonia caused by Mycoplasma species. It is sometimes used adjunctively for influenza & colds when secondary bacterial infections occur, and for conditions like bronchitis, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, and sinusitis where bacterial infections are present.

Eltocin 250 works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis, preventing the growth and spread of bacteria. Erythromycin targets bacterial ribosomes, specifically binding to the 50S subunit, thereby disrupting essential protein formation needed for bacterial survival. This makes it effective against a broad spectrum of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including Streptococcus pneumoniae, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Chlamydia trachomatis, and Klebsiella pneumoniae. It is particularly beneficial for patients requiring alternative antibiotics due to penicillin allergies.
For adults, the recommended daily dose of Erythromycin is 800mg to 1200mg, divided into 4 to 6 doses taken at regular intervals. -Eltocin 250mg: 1 tablet, 4 times a day (total 1000mg/day) If more frequent dosing is required, tablets can be divided using a pill cutter. However, do not exceed 4 full tablets plus 4/5 of a tablet per day. Pediatric Use: -Erythromycin is also prescribed for children, but the dosage is determined based on body weight. -Children should not take adult doses. Always consult a doctor or pharmacist for the appropriate dosage in pediatric patients. Duration of Use: -Erythromycin should be taken for the shortest effective period as prescribed. -Prolonged use can lead to bacterial resistance, making future infections harder to treat. Precautions: -Do not stop taking the medication early, even if symptoms improve, as this may lead to relapse or antibiotic resistance. -Do not exceed the prescribed dose, as this can increase the risk of side effects. -If severe diarrhea, fever, or abdominal pain occurs, stop taking the medication and consult a healthcare provider immediately, as these symptoms may indicate pseudomembranous colitis. -To support gut health, consider consuming probiotics (such as yogurt or lactic acid supplements) after completing the antibiotic course. If any severe side effects such as allergic reactions, jaundice, or abnormal heart rhythms occur, discontinue use and seek medical attention.
