Flagyl 200 Tablet contains metronidazole, a broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent from the nitroimidazole class. High tissue penetration including CNS, liver, and bones enhances its utility in widespread infections. > Parasitic Intestinal Infections Treats giardiasis and intestinal amebiasis by eliminating protozoa residing in the gastrointestinal tract. Relieves diarrhea, cramping, and malabsorption symptoms. > Clostridium difficile Infection (CDI) Acts as a secondary option for mild-to-moderate CDI when vancomycin or fidaxomicin are unavailable. Helps suppress toxin-producing bacteria in the colon. > Surgical Prophylaxis Administered preoperatively in colorectal procedures to prevent postoperative infections. Commonly used alongside cefazolin or similar agents. > Rosacea & Parasitic Skin Conditions Topical use reduces inflammation, pustules, and redness in rosacea and other parasitic dermatoses. Improves skin texture with consistent use.
Metronidazole inhibits DNA synthesis in anaerobic bacteria and protozoa by forming reactive nitro radical intermediates. Its action is selective to organisms with anaerobic metabolism, providing targeted antimicrobial activity with minimal effect on healthy flora. Flagyl is widely distributed in the body and achieves therapeutic levels in saliva, vaginal secretions, bile, and cerebrospinal fluid. Anaerobic Bacterial Infections → Initial: 15 mg/kg IV over 1 hour → Maintenance: 7.5 mg/kg IV or orally every 6 hours → Usual dose: 500 mg IV or orally every 6–8 hours → Do not exceed 4 g/day Intra-abdominal, Skin, Bone, or Joint Infections → 500 mg orally or IV every 8 hours → Often used with ceftriaxone or other beta-lactam antibiotics Bacterial Vaginosis → 500 mg orally twice daily for 7 days → or 2 g as a single oral dose (higher relapse rate) → or 0.75% intravaginal gel, 5 g daily for 5 days Trichomoniasis → 2 g orally as a single dose → or 500 mg orally twice daily for 7 days Giardiasis → 250 mg orally three times daily for 5–7 days Amebiasis (Intestinal) → 750 mg orally three times daily for 5–10 days CDI – Mild to Moderate (Alternative) → 500 mg orally three times daily for 10–14 days Surgical Prophylaxis → 500 mg IV within 60 minutes before incision → Used with cefazolin or similar agents → Take with or without food. → Do not consume alcohol during therapy or for 48 hours after the final dose. → If a dose is missed, take it as soon as remembered unless it is almost time for the next dose. Do not double up. → Complete the full prescribed course even if symptoms improve early. Renal/Hepatic Impairment: → In severe hepatic dysfunction, use with caution; dose adjustment may be needed → No routine adjustment required for ESRD, but administer after hemodialysis sessions due to drug clearance
