Product Description

Bdcolist 2 MIU Injection (Colistimethate Sodium) is a last-resort polymyxin-class antibiotic used for treating severe infections caused by multidrug-resistant gram-negative bacteria (MDR-GNB). It is especially effective against Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE), Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Acinetobacter baumannii.

Colistimethate works by binding to bacterial cell membrane phospholipids, disrupting their integrity and leading to cell death. Due to its risk of kidney and neurological side effects, Bdcolist 2 MIU is reserved for cases where no safer or more effective alternatives are available. Available through trusted online pharmacy platforms, it plays a critical role in managing life-threatening resistant infections.

Indications & Uses

  • Severe infections caused by Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE).
  • Effective against multidrug-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (respiratory and bloodstream infections).
  • One of the most active options against carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter, including ventilator-associated pneumonia.
  • Used in sepsis and systemic infections due to MDR gram-negative organisms.
  • Often administered in ICU patients or immunocompromised individuals.

Benefits & Effectiveness

  • Provides effective therapy when other antibiotics fail.
  • Restores bacterial susceptibility by disrupting cell membranes.
  • Can be administered IV, IM, or via inhalation for lung infections.
  • Frequently used in combination therapy (e.g., with carbapenems or tigecycline) to prevent resistance development.

Directions for Use

  • Adults (IV/IM): 2.5–5 mg/kg/day (colistin base), divided into 2–4 doses; max 5 mg/kg/day.
  • Acute infections: May require higher initial dosing under medical supervision.
  • Inhalation (respiratory infections): 50–75 mg in 3–4 mL saline via nebulizer, 2–3 times daily.
  • Pediatrics (≥2 years): Same as adults; neonates may require specialized dosing.
  • Always follow hospital or physician protocols.
  • Not effective against Proteus or Neisseria species.

Storage

  • Store below 25°C, protected from light.
  • Reconstituted solution should be used immediately or refrigerated for up to 24 hours.

Possible Side Effects

  • Common: Kidney-related side effects, dizziness, mild neurological symptoms, stomach upset.
  • Moderate: Eye/nerve irritation, unusual taste, muscle weakness.
  • Serious: Acute kidney injury, neuromuscular blockade, seizures, or difficulty breathing (rare).

FAQs

It is prescribed for severe infections caused by multidrug-resistant gram-negative bacteria (MDR-GNB) when no safer or more effective alternatives are available.
Yes. Inhaled colistimethate is often used for lung infections, including ventilator-associated pneumonia and cystic fibrosis–related respiratory infections.
The most important risks are nephrotoxicity (kidney damage) and neurotoxicity (nerve-related side effects). Dosing must be carefully adjusted in patients with renal impairment to minimize toxicity.
No. Colistimethate sodium is active only against multidrug-resistant gram-negative bacteria, not gram-positive organisms such as MRSA.
Due to its toxicity risks and the need to preserve its effectiveness, colistimethate is reserved as a last-line antibiotic for treating life-threatening resistant infections.
