Praziquantel 600mg is a broad-spectrum anthelmintic widely used for the treatment of parasitic worm infections. It demonstrates high efficacy against trematodes (flukes) and cestodes (tapeworms), and is internationally recognized as the standard therapy for schistosomiasis.
Its mechanism of action involves increasing calcium ion permeability in the parasite’s membrane, which induces spastic paralysis, dislodgement, and eventual death of the parasite.
Praziquantel is employed both in individual clinical treatment and in mass deworming programs across endemic regions, forming a cornerstone of global helminth control strategies.
Effective against a wide range of tapeworms including Taenia saginata, Taenia solium, and Diphyllobothrium latum. Praziquantel disrupts the worm’s tegument, causing disintegration and removal through natural digestion.
• Antiparasitics > Fluke Infections
Considered a first-line treatment for infections such as liver fluke (Clonorchis sinensis), lung fluke (Paragonimus westermani), and *intestinal flukes. It is the WHO-recommended agent for trematode infestations.

Essential therapy for Schistosoma haematobium, S. mansoni, and S. japonicum, highly prevalent in Africa, Asia, and South America. Plays a key role in mass deworming programs and is listed as a WHO essential medicine.

Used in combination with Albendazole for treating cysts caused by larval Taenia solium in the brain. Especially important in endemic regions for preventing seizures and neurological complications.

Adults
• Schistosomiasis (All species: S. haematobium, S. mansoni, S. japonicum, S. mekongi, S. intercalatum):
– Standard: 20 mg/kg orally three times in one day (4–6 hrs apart).
– S. haematobium, S. mansoni: 40 mg/kg/day in 2 divided doses.
– S. japonicum, S. mekongi, S. intercalatum: 60 mg/kg/day in 3 divided doses.
– Duration: 1 day.
• Liver Flukes (Clonorchis sinensis, Opisthorchis viverrini):
– 25 mg/kg orally three times in one day, or 75 mg/kg/day in 3 divided doses for 2 days.
• Intestinal Flukes (Fasciolopsis buski, Heterophyes heterophyes, Metagonimus yokogawai):
– 75 mg/kg/day in 3 divided doses for 1 day.
• Lung Fluke (Paragonimus westermani):
– 25 mg/kg orally three times daily for 2 consecutive days.
• Tapeworms (Diphyllobothrium latum, Dipylidium caninum, Taenia spp.):
– 5–10 mg/kg orally once.
• Dwarf Tapeworm (Hymenolepis nana):
– 25 mg/kg orally once.
• Cysticercosis (Cysticercus cellulosae):
– 50 mg/kg/day for 15 days.
Store in a cool, dry place below 25°C.
Protect from light and moisture.
Keep out of reach of children.
Common: abdominal discomfort, dizziness, headache.
Rare: allergic reactions, cardiac irregularities.
Special note: in cysticercosis treatment, dying parasites may trigger CNS symptoms such as headache or seizures.
