Levothyroxine acts as a replacement for endogenous thyroxine. It binds to thyroid hormone receptors in cell nuclei, initiating gene expression for proteins that regulate metabolism and energy. Therapeutic benefits include normalization of TSH, reversal of fatigue, mental fog, and weight gain, and improved cardiac function. In cancer management, high doses reduce TSH stimulation of residual thyroid tissue or tumor cells, reducing recurrence risk.
