Levepsy 250 contains levetiracetam 250mg, an antiepileptic drug commonly prescribed for managing seizures across various age groups. Known for its broad-spectrum efficacy and relatively low side-effect profile, it is widely used both as monotherapy and adjunctive treatment in patients with partial onset seizures, myoclonic seizures, and primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures.
- Sleep & Mental Health > Epilepsy Levetiracetam is indicated for the treatment of various seizure types, including focal seizures and generalized tonic-clonic seizures. It is effective in reducing seizure frequency and severity and is often used in combination with other antiepileptic drugs for enhanced control. > Depression, Anxiety, PTSD It has shown benefit in alleviating comorbid symptoms of anxiety and mood instability in epilepsy patients, possibly due to its neurochemical stabilizing effects. > Schizophrenia While not an approved indication, levetiracetam has been explored in clinical contexts for addressing affective instability in schizophrenia patients. > ADHD Emerging evidence suggests that levetiracetam may have auxiliary roles in improving impulse control and attention, particularly in pediatric epilepsy patients presenting with overlapping ADHD symptoms.
Levetiracetam acts by binding to the synaptic vesicle protein SV2A, modulating neurotransmitter release and reducing neuronal excitability. This mechanism helps to stabilize abnormal electrical activity in the brain, making it effective for seizure prevention across a wide range of seizure types.
Usual Adult Dose for Epilepsy: - Immediate-Release: Start at 500 mg orally or IV twice a day - Titrate in 500 mg increments every 2 weeks - Maintenance: 500–1500 mg twice a day - Maximum: 3000 mg/day - Extended-Release (Partial Seizures only): Start at 1000 mg once a day - Titrate in 1000 mg increments every 2 weeks - Maintenance: 1000–3000 mg/day - Maximum: 3000 mg/day Usual Adult Dose for Seizures: - Same as epilepsy dosing above, applicable for all seizure types including myoclonic and generalized tonic-clonic Usual Pediatric Dose for Epilepsy: - 1 month to <6 months: 7 mg/kg BID (max 21 mg/kg) - 6 months to <4 years: 10 mg/kg BID (max 25 mg/kg) - 4 to <16 years: 10 mg/kg BID, max 30 mg/kg > >40 kg: 500 mg BID, max 1500 mg BID - 16 years and older: follow adult dosing - Extended-Release: 12+ years > Start: 1000 mg once daily > Max: 3000 mg/day Usual Pediatric Dose for Seizures: - Same as pediatric epilepsy dosing above, effective for partial, myoclonic, and generalized tonic-clonic types Comments: - Can be started orally or IV; IV infused over ≥15 mins - Extended-release form only for partial seizures - Use whole tablets only; oral solution for ≤20 kg - No added benefit above 3000 mg/day

- Common: Drowsiness, fatigue, dizziness, headache, irritability - Less Common: Mood changes, depression, coordination issues - Rare: Suicidal thoughts, severe behavioral changes, Stevens-Johnson syndrome - Pediatric: Increased aggression or mood swings may be noted
