Levipil XR 500 contains levetiracetam 500mg, a long-acting antiepileptic medication widely used for the treatment of various seizure disorders. As an extended-release formulation, it provides sustained therapeutic levels, reducing the frequency of daily dosing and improving patient compliance. Levetiracetam is known for its favorable safety profile, limited drug interactions, and rapid onset of action.
- Sleep & Mental Health > Epilepsy Levipil XR 500 is indicated for the management of partial onset seizures, myoclonic seizures, and primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures in both pediatric and adult populations. It can be used as monotherapy or adjunctive therapy depending on the clinical context. > Depression, Anxiety, PTSD Levetiracetam has been observed to improve mood symptoms in patients with epilepsy, particularly those experiencing comorbid depression, anxiety, or PTSD. It is occasionally used as an off-label adjunct to enhance emotional stability. > Schizophrenia While not formally approved for this indication, levetiracetam has been explored in clinical studies for its potential in managing mood dysregulation and cognitive instability in schizophrenia, especially when standard antipsychotic therapy is insufficient. > ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) In select cases, particularly where ADHD coexists with epilepsy, levetiracetam may offer adjunctive benefits by improving attention and reducing impulsivity. Its use in ADHD remains investigational but has been highlighted in several reports.
Levetiracetam binds to synaptic vesicle protein SV2A, modulating neurotransmitter release and reducing neuronal hyperexcitability. This mechanism is distinct from other antiepileptic drugs, contributing to its synergistic effect when combined with other therapies.
Usual Adult Dose for Epilepsy (Extended-Release): - Initial dose: 1000 mg orally once daily - Titrate: Increase in increments of 1000 mg every 2 weeks based on efficacy and tolerability - Maintenance dose: 1000 to 3000 mg orally once daily - Maximum dose: 3000 mg/day Usual Adult Dose for Seizures (Extended-Release): - Initial dose: 1000 mg orally once daily - Titrate: Increase by 1000 mg at 2-week intervals if needed - Maintenance: 1000 to 3000 mg/day - Note: Effectiveness of doses >3000 mg/day is not established Usual Pediatric Dose for Epilepsy (Extended-Release): - 12 years or older: - Start: 1000 mg orally once daily - Titrate: Increase by 1000 mg every 2 weeks - Maintenance: 1000 to 3000 mg once daily - Max: 3000 mg/day Myoclonic Seizures (12+ years): - 500 mg twice a day, increasing by 500 mg every 2 weeks as needed - Max: 3000 mg/day Primary Generalized Tonic-Clonic Seizures: - 6 to <16 years: 10 mg/kg twice a day, max 30 mg/kg twice a day - 16 years+: 500 mg twice a day, increase as tolerated, max 1500 mg twice a day
Store at room temperature between 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F). Protect from moisture and direct sunlight. Keep in a tightly closed container. Do not freeze.
Common side effects may include somnolence, dizziness, fatigue, irritability, and nasopharyngitis. Rare but serious effects include behavioral abnormalities (e.g., aggression, hostility, suicidal ideation) and coordination issues. Liver function monitoring is advised in long-term use.
