Levepsy 500 contains levetiracetam 500mg, an antiepileptic drug used to manage various types of seizures. It modulates neurotransmitter release by binding to the synaptic vesicle protein SV2A, offering a well-tolerated and effective option for both monotherapy and adjunctive therapy in epilepsy.

Its broad-spectrum efficacy and minimal drug interactions make it suitable for diverse epilepsy patients. > Depression, Anxiety, PTSD Though not a primary indication, levetiracetam may assist in stabilizing mood and reducing anxiety symptoms in epileptic patients, especially when these comorbidities complicate seizure control. > Schizophrenia Emerging evidence suggests potential cognitive benefits in schizophrenia, particularly in emotional regulation and neural excitability stabilization. > ADHD For patients with concurrent ADHD and epilepsy, levetiracetam may serve as an adjunctive option when standard ADHD medications are contraindicated.
Levetiracetam acts by binding to SV2A in presynaptic terminals, modulating calcium-dependent neurotransmitter release and preventing seizure activity. Its precise mechanism supports its use across multiple seizure types with fewer cognitive or behavioral side effects compared to older antiepileptics.
Usual Adult Dose for Epilepsy: - Immediate-Release: - Initial dose: 500 mg orally or IV twice a day - Increase: 500 mg twice daily every 2 weeks as needed - Maintenance: 500 to 1500 mg twice daily - Maximum: 3000 mg/day - Extended-Release (Partial Onset Only): - Initial dose: 1000 mg once daily - Increase: 1000 mg increments every 2 weeks - Maintenance: 1000 to 3000 mg daily - Maximum: 3000 mg/day Usual Adult Dose for Seizures: (Same as above) Comments: - IV option should be infused over at least 15 minutes. - Extended-release forms are only for partial onset seizures. - No added benefit over 3000 mg/day. - Myoclonic/generalized seizure doses under 3000 mg not studied. Uses: - Adjunctive therapy for partial onset seizures - Adjunctive therapy for myoclonic seizures in juvenile myoclonic epilepsy - Adjunctive therapy for generalized tonic-clonic seizures in idiopathic generalized epilepsy Usual Pediatric Dose for Epilepsy: Immediate-Release: - 1M–6M: 7 mg/kg twice a day; max: 21 mg/kg - 6M–4Y: 10 mg/kg twice a day; max: 25 mg/kg - 4Y–16Y: 10 mg/kg twice a day; max: 30 mg/kg Alternative: - 20–40 kg: 250 mg twice a day; max: 750 mg - >40 kg: 500 mg twice a day; max: 1500 mg - 16Y+: Same as adults Extended-Release: - 12Y+: 1000 mg once daily; titrate to 3000 mg max Myoclonic Seizures (12Y+): - Start: 500 mg twice a day - Maintenance: 500–1500 mg BID - Max: 3000 mg/day Tonic-Clonic Seizures: - 6Y–16Y: 10 mg/kg BID; max: 30 mg/kg - 16Y+: 500 mg BID; max: 1500 mg BID Comments: - Use whole tablets - Oral solution for ≤20kg body weight - Reduce dose if not tolerated - Effectiveness <3000 mg/day not established
