Encorate 200 is a generic gastro-resistant tablet formulation containing sodium valproate 200mg. It is commonly prescribed for managing various forms of epilepsy and is also widely utilized in psychiatric treatment, particularly for mood stabilization in bipolar disorder. Its delayed-release design helps minimize gastric irritation while maintaining consistent blood levels for therapeutic efficacy. Encorate 200 is especially favored for long-term neurological control and psychiatric symptom management across diverse patient populations.
- Sleep & Mental Health > Epilepsy Sodium valproate is extensively used in epilepsy treatment, particularly for controlling abnormal electrical activity in the brain. It effectively manages both partial and generalized seizures, making it suitable for a wide range of seizure types including absence, complex partial, and tonic-clonic episodes. Its efficacy in long-term monotherapy or adjunctive therapy is well-established. > Bipolar Disorder As a mood stabilizer, sodium valproate plays a key role in managing acute manic episodes and preventing mood cycling in bipolar disorder. It reduces the frequency and severity of mood swings and is often a preferred alternative for patients who do not respond well to lithium. > Depression, Anxiety, PTSD Though not a first-line treatment, sodium valproate has shown ancillary benefits in alleviating depressive and anxiety symptoms, particularly in bipolar patients. It may also aid in mood stabilization in PTSD when traditional treatments prove insufficient.
Sodium valproate works by increasing the levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain. This suppresses excessive neural firing that leads to seizures and mood disturbances. It stabilizes neuronal activity, providing anticonvulsant and mood-regulating effects. Additionally, it modulates ion channels and histone deacetylase pathways, contributing to neuroprotective properties.
Adult Dosing – Epilepsy 1. Complex Partial Seizures: - Initial: 10–15 mg/kg/day orally - Titrate: +5–10 mg/kg/week as needed - Max: 60 mg/kg/day - Doses >250 mg/day should be divided (2–3 doses/day) 2. Absence Seizures: - Initial: 15 mg/kg/day - Titrate similarly - Max: 60 mg/kg/day 3. Monotherapy Conversion: - Start valproate dosing as above - Taper off other antiepileptics by ~25% every 2 weeks - Adjust speed based on control & tolerance 4. IV Form (short-term): - Same dose as oral - Infuse over 60 minutes (≤20 mg/min) - Limit to ≤14 days; transition to oral ASAP Clinical Notes: - Therapeutic range: 50–100 mcg/mL - Monitor serum levels for dose adjustments - Most patients respond well below 60 mg/kg/day Pediatric Dosing (≥10 years): - Initial: 10–15 mg/kg/day - Titrate: +5–10 mg/kg/week - Max: 60 mg/kg/day - Divide doses if >250 mg/day - IV dosing mirrors oral; same precautions apply Seizure Types: - Simple absence: brief awareness loss, no motor activity - Complex absence: with automatisms or behavioral disruptions - Used for monotherapy or adjunct in multiple seizure presentations
Store below 30°C (86°F) in a dry, well-ventilated area away from heat and direct sunlight. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children. Avoid humid environments such as bathrooms to prevent tablet degradation.
