Product Description

Norlut-N 5 contains 5 mg of Norethindrone Acetate, a synthetic progestin widely used in managing hormone-related gynecological conditions. It is effective in treating endometriosis, secondary amenorrhea, and irregular uterine bleeding caused by hormonal imbalance. By mimicking natural progesterone, it suppresses ovulation, regulates the menstrual cycle, and stabilizes the endometrium. At higher doses, it may also be used to delay menstruation. Off-label, Norethindrone Acetate is used as a palliative hormonal agent in estrogen-dependent cancers such as breast and endometrial cancer, especially in patients requiring fertility preservation or when surgery is contraindicated.

Indications & Uses

  • HORMONES & MENOPAUSAL SYMPTOMS > Endometriosis
Relieves pelvic pain and abnormal bleeding by suppressing endometrial growth. Offers a non-surgical approach to control symptoms of mild to moderate endometriosis.

  • HORMONES & MENOPAUSAL SYMPTOMS > Irregular Menstrual Bleeding
Helps correct abnormal uterine bleeding related to hormone imbalances by stabilizing the endometrium and inducing scheduled withdrawal bleeding.

  • PILLS & CONTRACEPTION > Hormonal Contraceptive
Although typically prescribed in lower doses for birth control, the active ingredient may serve as a part of progestin-only contraceptive regimens.

  • FEMTECH > Menstrual Control
Used to delay menstruation or regulate cycles in women with unpredictable or heavy menses, supporting lifestyle or travel-related menstrual management.

  • AntiCancer Drugs / Others
Occasionally utilized off-label in managing hormone-sensitive cancers like breast or endometrial cancer in select cases where surgical intervention is not ideal or fertility preservation is prioritized.

Benefits & Effectiveness

  • Progesterone Receptor Binding: Norethindrone Acetate binds to receptors in the reproductive tract, suppressing gonadotropin release and inhibiting ovulation.

  • Endometrial Stabilization: Transforms the endometrium into a stable secretory state, preventing abnormal bleeding and lowering the risk of endometrial hyperplasia.

  • Hormonal Balance: Restores progesterone activity to regulate cycles and manage hormone-related conditions.

  • Cancer Protection (Off-label): Its mild androgenic activity helps reduce estrogen-driven proliferation in certain hormone-sensitive cancers such as breast and endometrial cancer.

Directions for Use

  • Abnormal Uterine Bleeding (Adults)
2.5 to 10 mg orally once daily for 5 to 10 days. Withdrawal bleeding generally occurs 3–7 days after discontinuation. Only to be used if the endometrium is adequately estrogen-primed. Use: For temporary management of functional bleeding not due to structural abnormalities.

  • Secondary Amenorrhea (Adults)
Same as above: 2.5 to 10 mg orally once daily for 5–10 days. Used to reinitiate menstrual bleeding in hormonally inactive patients.

  • Contraception (Adults & Adolescents)
0.35 mg orally once daily at the same time each day. Provides progestin-only contraception, suitable for breastfeeding women or those intolerant to estrogen.

  • Endometriosis (Adults)
Start at 5 mg orally once daily for 2 weeks, then increase by 2.5 mg/day every 2 weeks, up to a maximum of 15 mg/day. Treatment duration ranges from 6 to 9 months, or until breakthrough bleeding necessitates a pause. Used for symptomatic relief of endometriosis-related pelvic pain and dysmenorrhea.

  • Pediatric Contraception (Post-menarche Adolescents <16 yrs)
0.35 mg orally once daily at the same hour each day. Provides safe and effective pregnancy prevention for younger patients.

Storage

  • Store below 30°C in a cool, dry location.
  • Protect from direct sunlight and humidity.
  • Keep the medication in its original packaging and out of reach of children.
  • Do not use after the printed expiration date.

Possible Side Effects

  • Potential adverse effects include nausea, breast tenderness, headache, bloating, weight gain, mood changes, and acne.
  • Long-term or high-dose use may result in breakthrough bleeding or menstrual suppression.
  • Rarely, it may increase the risk of thromboembolic events.
  • Any signs of vision changes, persistent leg pain, or chest discomfort warrant immediate medical attention.

FAQs

Yes, at higher doses, it can safely delay menstruation when started a few days before the expected period.
