Arpizol 15 is a generic atypical antipsychotic that contains aripiprazole, primarily used to manage symptoms of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and adjunctive treatment for major depressive disorder. It helps to regulate mood, reduce hallucinations, and stabilize thought processes by acting on dopamine and serotonin receptors.
- Sleep & Mental Health > Schizophrenia Aripiprazole is widely prescribed in schizophrenia to mitigate symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, and disorganized thinking, improving overall functioning and reducing relapse rates. > Bipolar Disorder It is effective in managing manic and depressive episodes associated with bipolar I disorder, helping to stabilize mood swings and prevent recurrence when used alone or with mood stabilizers like lithium. > Depression, Anxiety, PTSD Used as adjunctive therapy in treatment-resistant major depressive disorder, especially when SSRIs or SNRIs alone are insufficient. Also shows benefit in anxiety and PTSD by modulating neurotransmitter pathways related to stress and mood. > Autism Helps manage irritability, aggression, and severe tantrums in children with autism spectrum disorders, improving behavioral symptoms and social engagement. > Tourette Syndrome Used to reduce the frequency and severity of motor and vocal tics in individuals with Tourette’s syndrome, enhancing daily functioning and quality of life.
Aripiprazole acts as a partial agonist at dopamine D2 and serotonin 5-HT1A receptors and an antagonist at 5-HT2A receptors, balancing dopaminergic and serotonergic activity in the brain to control psychosis and mood disturbances.
Adult Dosing: - Schizophrenia: Oral immediate-release tablets usually start at 10–15 mg daily; most patients respond well within this range. Max dose is 30 mg/day. - Bipolar Disorder: Monotherapy starts at 15 mg/day; as adjunct with lithium or valproate, use 10–15 mg/day. Max dose is 30 mg/day. Adjust dose every 2 weeks as needed. - Agitated State: IM injection starts at 9.75 mg, followed by 5.25–15 mg maintenance; max 30 mg/day. Transition to oral therapy as soon as possible. - Depression (Adjunctive): Oral IR starts at 2–5 mg/day; increase weekly by ≤5 mg to a max of 15 mg/day. Used alongside SSRIs/SNRIs. Pediatric Dosing: - Schizophrenia (13–17 yrs): Start 2 mg/day, titrate to 10 mg/day; max 30 mg/day. - Bipolar Disorder (10–17 yrs): Similar to schizophrenia; target 10 mg, max 30 mg/day. - Autism (6–17 yrs): Begin at 2 mg/day, titrate to 5–15 mg/day; max 15 mg/day. - Tourette’s Syndrome (6–18 yrs): <50 kg: Start 2 mg, max 10 mg/day ≥50 kg: Start 2 mg, titrate to 10 mg by day 8; max 20 mg/day General Comments: Oral tablets and solutions can be substituted mg-to-mg up to 25 mg. Injections require prior oral tolerability. Dose increases should be spaced 1–2 weeks apart. Avoid injecting both extended-release types in the same muscle on the same day.
Store in a cool, dry place away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Do not freeze or expose to excessive humidity.
Common side effects include headache, nausea, dizziness, anxiety, insomnia, weight gain, and fatigue. Rare but serious risks include extrapyramidal symptoms, increased blood sugar, and neuroleptic malignant syndrome.
