Product Description

Calutide 50 is an oral formulation of bicalutamide, a first-generation non-steroidal antiandrogen widely used in androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) for prostate cancer. It selectively inhibits the binding of androgens to androgen receptors in prostate tumor cells, suppressing tumor growth while maintaining circulating testosterone levels. This mechanism helps reduce tumor burden and slow disease progression, especially when combined with luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) analogs or orchiectomy. Calutide 50 remains a cornerstone therapy in managing locally advanced or metastatic prostate cancer, providing effective and convenient oral administration.

Indications & Uses

  • AntiCancer Drugs > Locally Advanced Prostate Cancer
Calutide 50 is indicated in combination with LHRH analogs or surgical castration for patients with locally advanced prostate cancer. Its selective androgen receptor blockade helps preserve libido and muscle strength, supporting quality of life during long-term therapy. In patients with Stage D2 metastatic prostate cancer, Calutide 50 is administered as part of combined androgen blockade (CAB), blocking both testicular and adrenal androgen sources. Long-term bicalutamide therapy may be associated with Antiandrogen Withdrawal Syndrome (AWS), where discontinuation can transiently reduce PSA levels in hormone-refractory patients.

Benefits & Effectiveness

  • Non-steroidal antiandrogen that selectively inhibits androgen receptor binding

  • Maintains physiological testosterone levels while blocking its effect on cancer cells

  • Effective in both localized and metastatic prostate cancer when used with LHRH analogs

  • May preserve libido and bone density compared to chemical castration alone

  • Antiandrogen Withdrawal Syndrome (AWS) may offer transient benefit in some resistant cases after withdrawal

Directions for Use

  • 50 mg orally once daily (morning or evening) in combination with an LHRH analog

  • Begin treatment simultaneously with LHRH analog

  • Take with or without food, swallow tablet whole

  • If a dose is missed, do not double up—resume next scheduled dose

  • Continue therapy unless advised to discontinue by a physician

Storage

  • Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place

  • Protect from moisture, direct sunlight, and keep out of reach of children

  • Do not use if packaging is damaged or expired

Possible Side Effects

  • Common: breast tenderness, hot flashes, gynecomastia, fatigue

  • Less common: nausea, rash, liver function abnormalities

  • Rare: interstitial lung disease, cardiovascular effects, photosensitivity

  • Regular liver function monitoring recommended during prolonged therapy

FAQs

No. It is typically used in combination with an LHRH analog or surgical castration to maximize androgen suppression.
Bicalutamide blocks androgen receptors without lowering testosterone, which helps maintain sexual and physical health during treatment.
AWS refers to a rare occurrence where PSA levels drop after discontinuing bicalutamide in some resistant prostate cancer patients. It is not predictable and should be managed under clinical supervision.
