Bandy 400 is a widely used generic formulation of albendazole 400mg, a benzimidazole-class anthelmintic that disrupts parasite metabolism by binding to beta-tubulin and inhibiting microtubule polymerization. It is effective against a broad spectrum of intestinal and tissue-dwelling helminths.
- Antiparasitics > Intestinal Parasites Albendazole 400mg is indicated for the treatment of infections caused by roundworms, whipworms, pinworms, and hookworms. It kills parasites by blocking glucose uptake, leading to energy depletion and death. > Neurocysticercosis (Taenia solium larvae) Used in first-line therapy for parasitic infections of the brain, particularly those caused by pork tapeworm larvae. Albendazole crosses the blood-brain barrier and is recommended along with corticosteroids and anticonvulsants. > Hydatid Disease (Echinococcus granulosus) An essential treatment for cystic echinococcosis affecting the liver and lungs. Multiple cycles with breaks are often required. Albendazole interrupts the development of hydatid cysts. > Hookworm / Pinworm / Tapeworm Infections Albendazole has demonstrated broad efficacy in eradicating helminths that cause gastrointestinal distress, malnutrition, and anemia. It is suitable for mass deworming programs. - Diseases/Symptoms > Off-label Potential Anticancer Adjunct Therapy Albendazole has shown in vitro activity against various cancer cell lines (lung, liver, brain, ovarian) by disrupting microtubules and inducing mitotic arrest. It may sensitize resistant tumors and is being studied as a repurposed chemotherapy adjuvant.
Albendazole irreversibly blocks microtubule formation by binding to tubulin in parasite cells, halting their ability to absorb glucose. The resulting ATP depletion causes cellular autolysis. It is larvicidal, ovicidal, and vermicidal.
Albendazole – Adult Dosing - Hydatid Disease / Neurocysticercosis: <60 kg: 15 mg/kg/day in 2 divided doses (max 800 mg/day) ≥60 kg: 400 mg twice daily Duration: Hydatid → 28-day cycle × 3 (14-day break) / Neurocysticercosis → 8–30 days Administer with food. Use corticosteroids/anticonvulsants if needed. - Cutaneous Larva Migrans: 400 mg once daily × 3–7 days - Ascariasis / Hookworm / Trichostrongylosis / Enterocolitis: 400 mg single dose - Pinworm (Enterobius): 400 mg single dose, repeat in 2 weeks - Filariasis: 400 mg twice daily × 10 days - Visceral Larva Migrans: 400 mg twice daily × 5–20 days - Strongyloidiasis: 400 mg twice daily × 7 days - Trichinosis: 400 mg twice daily × 8–14 days - Whipworm: 400 mg once daily × 3 days - Capillariasis: 400 mg once daily × 10 days - Gnathostomiasis: 400 mg twice daily × 21 days - Liver Fluke (Clonorchis): 10 mg/kg/day × 7 days - Echinococcosis (chronic): 400 mg twice daily × 1–6 months - Loiasis: 200 mg twice daily × 21 days - Cysticercosis: 400 mg twice daily × 8–30 days - Microsporidiosis: 400 mg twice daily × 21+ days (esp. for HIV patients) Albendazole – Pediatric Dosing - Hydatid Disease / Neurocysticercosis / Microsporidiosis / Cysticercosis: <60 kg: 15 mg/kg/day in 2 doses (max 800 mg) ≥60 kg: 400 mg twice daily Duration: Hydatid → 28-day cycle × 3 / Neurocysticercosis: 8–30 days - Ascariasis / Hookworm / Trichostrongylosis / Enterocolitis: 400 mg once (age ≥2) - Pinworm: <20 kg: 200 mg once / ≥20 kg: 400 mg once / Repeat in 2 weeks - Filariasis / Strongyloidiasis / Trichinosis: 400 mg twice daily × 7–14 days - Capillariasis: 400 mg once daily × 10–100 days - Cutaneous Larva Migrans: ≥2 yr: 400 mg daily × 3 days / <2 yr: topical only - Whipworm / Visceral Larva Migrans / Gnathostomiasis: 400 mg × 3–21 days - Liver Fluke (Clonorchis): 10 mg/kg/day × 7 days - Loiasis: 200 mg twice daily × 21 days
