Efudix 5% Cream - 20g is a topical antimetabolite formulation containing 5% fluorouracil. It selectively targets rapidly proliferating atypical epidermal cells by inhibiting thymidylate synthase, disrupting DNA synthesis. Indicated primarily for actinic keratosis, superficial basal cell carcinoma, and Bowen’s disease, Efudix offers a non-invasive treatment alternative with proven efficacy.
- AntiCancerDrugs > Actinic Keratosis Efudix 5% Cream is widely used for the treatment of actinic (solar) keratosis, a premalignant condition caused by chronic UV exposure. Applied twice daily, it induces localized erythema, erosion, and exfoliation, selectively eliminating dysplastic cells and promoting healthy skin regeneration. > Superficial Basal Cell Carcinoma Efudix is indicated for treating superficial basal cell carcinoma when surgical options are not ideal. Its mechanism promotes inflammatory cell death of the lesion without systemic involvement, making it suitable for cosmetically or surgically sensitive sites. > Bowen’s Disease Efudix is effective in treating squamous cell carcinoma in situ (Bowen’s Disease). Its topical cytotoxicity confines action to the epidermis, eliminating cancerous cells while sparing deeper dermal structures. It serves as a practical non-surgical alternative, particularly for extensive or multifocal lesions. > Offlabel Dermatologic Use Efudix has been used off-label in managing resistant viral warts, keloids, and HPV-induced epithelial changes under dermatological supervision. These applications are investigational and require specialist oversight.

1. Actinic Keratosis - Use 5% cream or solution - Apply thin layer to lesions twice daily for 2–4 weeks - Stop when erosion occurs; healing continues for 1–2 months post-treatment - Begin application 10 minutes after washing and drying area - Avoid mucous membranes; wash hands after use - Biopsy lesions unresponsive to therapy 2. Superficial Basal Cell Carcinoma - Apply 5% cream twice daily to affected area for 3–6 weeks; may extend to 10–12 weeks - Continue until erosion and visible lesion resolution occurs - Inflammatory sequence: erythema → scaling → crusting → erosion → healing 3. Bowen’s Disease - Apply thinly over the lesion twice daily for up to 6 weeks - Monitor for complete epithelial response and absence of dermal infiltration - Suitable for patients ineligible for surgery
