Product Description

Flonida 1% Cream is a topical formulation containing 1% w/w fluorouracil, a pyrimidine antimetabolite that interferes with DNA synthesis by inhibiting thymidylate synthase. This action selectively targets dysplastic or neoplastic skin cells while sparing healthy tissue. It is primarily used in dermatologic oncology for treating actinic keratosis, superficial basal cell carcinoma, and Bowen’s disease. As a non-invasive alternative to surgery, it is valued for its ability to induce localized cell death through topical application, triggering a cycle of inflammation, necrosis, and skin renewal.

Indications & Uses

  • AntiCancer Drugs > Actinic Keratosis
Indicated for treating precancerous lesions caused by chronic sun exposure. Fluorouracil cream induces a controlled inflammatory reaction that leads to shedding of atypical keratinocytes and eventual skin regeneration.

  • Superficial Basal Cell Carcinoma
Used as a non-surgical topical treatment for small, low-risk basal cell carcinomas when excision is not feasible. Acts by targeting cancerous cells in the epidermis.

  • Bowen’s Disease
Applied for carcinoma in situ of the skin. Offers a nonsurgical, skin-preserving treatment option by selectively destroying intraepidermal malignant cells.

  • Off-label Dermatologic Use
May be used in specific cases under physician guidance for conditions such as warts, keloids, and HPV-related cutaneous lesions, although not officially approved for these indications.

Benefits & Effectiveness

  • Inhibits thymidylate synthase, blocking DNA replication in abnormal skin cells

  • Selectively targets dysplastic and cancerous cells with minimal systemic absorption

  • Induces inflammation followed by necrosis and reepithelialization

  • Provides a non-invasive, cosmetically favorable option in dermatologic oncology

Directions for Use

  • Actinic Keratosis
1% Cream: Apply twice daily in a thin layer covering all lesions
Duration: 2 to 4 weeks depending on tolerance and lesion severity

  • Superficial Basal Cell Carcinoma
    5% Cream: Apply twice daily
Duration: 3 to 6 weeks, extendable to 12 weeks in some cases
Only 5% strength is recommended for this indication
