Designed for enhanced bioavailability and smoother pharmacokinetic profiles, this formulation provides prolonged therapeutic effects with fewer daily doses. It is widely prescribed for the management of seizure disorders, bipolar affective disorder, and as adjunct therapy for various psychiatric and neurological conditions.
- Sleep & Mental Health > Epilepsy Valprid CR 200 is highly effective in controlling a broad range of seizures, including generalized tonic-clonic seizures, complex partial seizures, and absence seizures. It increases the brain’s GABA concentration, suppressing neuronal hyperactivity and stabilizing electrical signals in the central nervous system. > Bipolar Disorder This medication is frequently used for both the acute management of manic episodes and for long-term mood stabilization in bipolar patients. It reduces mood swings, impulsivity, and emotional volatility, often serving as an alternative or supplement to lithium. > Depression, Anxiety, PTSD In mood and anxiety disorders, Valprid CR 200 is occasionally used off-label as a stabilizing agent, especially in patients who are unresponsive to standard antidepressants. It can help with impulsive aggression, severe anxiety episodes, and mood lability. - Painkillers & Headache > Migraine Prevention Valprid CR 200 is also indicated for migraine prophylaxis in patients with recurrent or disabling headache patterns. It reduces cortical excitability and modulates pain pathways, leading to a decrease in attack frequency and severity.
Valprid CR 200 enhances GABAergic transmission and suppresses excessive neuronal discharge by combining sodium valproate and valproic acid. This dual-mechanism approach offers reliable seizure control and mood stabilization. The controlled-release system ensures consistent plasma levels, minimizing peak-related side effects and enhancing adherence.
Adult Dosing - Initial: 10–15 mg/kg/day with or after meals - Titration: Increase by 5–10 mg/kg/week - Maintenance: 20–30 mg/kg/day (~1200–1800 mg/day for 60 kg adult) - Max: Up to 60 mg/kg/day (~3600 mg/day) - Notes: Divide doses >250 mg/day; use fixed dosing times; monitor plasma levels (50–100 mcg/mL) if seizures persist Pediatric Dosing (Ages 10+) - Initial: 10–15 mg/kg/day with meals - Titration: Weekly increase of 5–10 mg/kg/day - Maintenance: Typically 20–30 mg/kg/day - Max: 60 mg/kg/day - Notes: Adjust for seizure type and weight; divide doses >250 mg/day; routine liver and platelet monitoring required Special Considerations - Tapering Previous AEDs: Reduce by ~25% every 2 weeks upon starting valproate - Not interchangeable 1:1 with single-ingredient products - Extended-release allows once-daily dosing; improves compliance - Monitor for: AST, ALT, platelet count, ammonia, plasma levels (if inadequate control or toxicity suspected)
